When a team begins to lose its sense of unity and strength, several changes can be noticed. The personal goals of team members begin to outweigh the goals of the team. The team members no longer support and recognise each other. There is mistrust or even lack of respect in the team. The team members tend to be tired and the energy level is low. These are just a few examples.

How to unite, inspire and empower a team? The answer is team coaching. It’s a structured process designed to improve team awareness and collaboration, performance and effectiveness. It involves working with the team as a whole rather than individual members. Through greater alignment, improved relationships, smoother cooperation, better performance and higher satisfaction, the team can make the step from good to great.

Every team deserves occasional team coaching to addresses, among other things, the following:

Aligning the team goals and values

Clarifying the roles and responsibilities

Formulating the team agreements

Improving the communication patterns

Fostering accountability

Building trust

Enhancing collaboration and cooperation

Creating the strategy to meet the goals

Identifying and overcoming the obstacles

Encouraging continuous development

Boosting team spirit and energy

Strengthening the sense of unity

The team coaching process typically unfolds over several stages. The exact process can vary depending on the coach, the team’s specific needs and the organisational context. Still, the general flow can be broken down into these key phases: initial assessment, awareness creation, goal setting and agreement, development and action planning, implementation, reflection and adjustments, review and celebration.

We cannot underestimate the complexity of a team. It’s the leader’s responsibility to transform a group of people to a high-performing team. If necessary, different tools, methods and professionals need to be involved. There are various possibilities, but team coaching is one of the most effective ones – it gives your team a chance to be united, inspired and co-creators of your shared success story.

Recent global research shows that employee expectations, particularly among younger generations, have changed. More than ever, they are now looking for meaning, purpose, freedom and personal fulfilment in their work. They also desire more personal growth and making an impact, while maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Leaders need to adapt and develop a new leadership style to implement these changes and foster high-performing work cultures and environments.

Modern leadership development is more tailored, personalised and flexible. It’s also one of the reasons why coaching is now firmly established in the business world and enjoys a growing popularity. Executive coaching is a personalised growth journey for developing leadership skills, building strategies and sharpening performance. A coach empowers, encourages and challenges leaders to think differently, to think bigger, and holds them accountable to achieve goals faster than they would on their own. A coach supports leaders in their unique greatness, but also asks stimulating questions that enable a leader to truly reflect on themselves. Below are listed some of the questions to give you an idea of what an executive coaching session might entail.

What are your values? How are these visible to others?

What makes you unique? What is the special thing you bring?

What would you like to achieve as a leader?

What would you gain by achieving it?

Imagine stepping into the future and experiencing it. How does that look like – what do you notice or feel?

What steps can you take to move closer to your goal?

What’s holding you back from achieving your goal?

Have you faced similar challenges before? What strategies helped you to overcome them?

What strengths do you have that you are not using now?

What additional resources might you need to move forward, and how can you find them?

Imagine having a dialogue with the wisest person you know or can think of. What would they tell you to do?

What are your most valuable takeaways from our conversation today? How do these support your goal?

What is your plan for integrating these takeaways and taking action?

How will you hold yourself accountable for your progress?

Coaching has value for all leaders, but especially for those new in their role. It’s common that experienced specialists with the strongest and most relevant skills in the field are promoted into leadership roles. However, being a great specialist does not automatically guarantee that you have the skills to be a great leader. There is a growing consensus that soft skills, just like technical skills, need to be learned and developed, and that this step is important for a successful transition from a specialist to a leader.

Every leader deserves to experience success and to feel self-fulfilment, recognition and satisfaction. Research in the field of coaching has shown that leaders who work with a professional coach are closer to achieving this. Coaching unlocks, encourages and empowers the leader’s potential to maximise the performance. Coaching is the perfect tool to support the development and advancement of the great leaders of the modern world.

Many of us operate with low levels of self-awareness without realising it. Even if you believe you’re an exception, the truth is that external influences have been shaping our choices since childhood. These influences can blur the line between our own desires and those imposed by others. Add to that the hectic pace of modern life and its endless opportunities. It’s no wonder we often remain superficial in our self-perception.

In coaching, we peel back the layers one by one. Through introspection, exploration, and discovery, coaching fosters much-needed self-awareness – understanding your unique personality, values, beliefs, emotions, strengths, ambitions, motivations, and areas for improvement. This journey of awareness takes time, effort, and a willingness to face discomfort, but the reward is priceless – access to your true self and inner resources. This is often underestimated and therefore, our true potential remains untapped.

The essence of coaching is to ask provocative and stimulating questions. Each coaching session has a structure, a goal anda timeframe. A coach doesn’t follow a set list of questions, it’s rather an organic flow within agreed objectives. Although some questions in coaching discussions may be similar, they will always have bespoke nuances to the topic at hand, with a goal in sight. Below are some broader questions to give an idea of what a coaching session might entail.

What is your goal – what would you like to have or achieve? If you are not sure yet, what is the part you currently know?

Why is it important for you to reach this goal?

How will you know and recognise that you have got it?

How will your life change after that? Try to imagine this moment – what do you notice, feel or experience?

What action have you taken so far? What other options do you have to move closer to your goal?

What advice would you give to a friend in your situation?

Which options will you choose to act on?

On a scale of 1-10, how committed are you to doing this? What can you do to make it a 10?

Conciously and consistently stimulated self-awareness gives you a competitive edge and unlocks the key to achieving your dreams.
